Visiting Author Series: The Double Portrait: Writing about Others in Relation to Ourselves with Phillip Lopate

We will be looking at ways to show someone’s character on the page: a friend, a parent, an acquaintance, a colleague, a frenemy. That person’s contradictions, oddities, strengths and weaknesses, physical appearance, habits, unique ways of speaking, all come into play. One of the surest ways to convey someone’s essence is by tracking him/her in a relationship, which may mean turning yourself into a character as well as portraying the other person. The arc of a friendship, say, or the seesaw of co-dependency, will be explored through literary examples and your own writing. Of course the ethics of writing about others also needs to be examined.

Friday, November 13th, 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM at the Lighthouse Writers Workshop, 1515 Race Street, Denver, CO 80206.
